Other UK small sources of radioactive waste
Other UK small sources
In addition to the 35 major waste producer sites reported in the 2010 Inventory (plus the LLW Repository near Drigg), there are several smaller sources of radioactive wastes in the UK that cannot be allocated to a specific geographical location. These include:
- Flasks and flatrols used to transport spent nuclear fuels between UK nuclear licensed sites. There are two sets of flasks and flatrols: EDF Energy and NDA owned.
- Defence Estates is responsible for managing MoD owned land and buildings. This includes the remediation of radioactively contaminated land from MoD non-nuclear licensed sites in the UK.
- Decommissioned nuclear powered submarines at Rosyth and Portsmouth dockyards.
- Various sites for Minor waste producers (MWP), i.e. small users of radioactive materials such as research, industrial and educational centres and hospitals. MWP produces small quantities of radioactive waste that cannot be disposed of with domestic and commercial wastes; and thus are managed Sellafield*.
* Radioactive waste from MWP managed at Harwell is reported under the Harwell site; similarly for waste at Sheffield.
