 Strategic Environmental Assessment

We are currently seeking your views (until 11 September 2009) on our Environmental and Sustainability Report that is part of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) undertaken to inform our draft UK Strategy for the Management of Solid Low Level Radioactive Waste from the Nuclear Industry (UK Nuclear Industry LLW Strategy).

A summary document highlights the content of the UK Nuclear Industry LLW Strategy, describes the assessment process, and identifies the findings and recommendations arising from the assessment.

For more information see consultations

The Scoping Report for the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the revised NDA Strategy and the UK Nuclear Industry Low Level Waste (LLW) Strategy (referred to as the UK Nuclear LLW Strategy) was consulted upon for 6 weeks.

Consultation on the Scoping Report primarily focussed on allowing nature conservation, heritage and environmental regulators to ensure their areas of interest are appropriately covered. SEA is a statutory requirement following the adoption of the European Union’s Directive 2001/42/EC on the assessment of the effect of certain plans and programmes on the environment. This was transposed into UK legislation through The Environmental Assessment of Plans and Programmes Regulations 2004. The aim of the SEA is to identify the associated environmental effects of implementing a plan or programme and how to avoid, manage or mitigate significant adverse effects, and enhance positive effects. The assessment of the NDA Strategy and LLW Strategy has been expanded to provide consideration to all relevant potential environmental, social and economic effects and will result in the publication of an individual Environmental and Sustainability Report for each Strategy.

The Scoping Report was the key output of the SEA process. It set out the proposed the scope of issues to be considered in the assessment. The purpose of the report is to present information on the proposed scope of the assessment, including:

  • A summary of the proposed Strategy
  • A review of the relevant plans and programmes to which the Strategy could contribute
  • A summary of key baseline information and identification of key issues; and
  • An outline of the proposed approach to completing the SEA.
