Strategic Environmental Assessment

Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is a statutory requirement following the adoption of the European Union's Directive 2001/42/EC on the assessment of the effect of certain plans and programmes on the environment.

UK legislation transposed this EU Directive through The Environmental Assessment of Plans and Programmes Regulations 2004. The aim of the SEA is to identify:

  • the associated environmental effects of implementing a plan or programme
  • how to avoid, manage or mitigate significant adverse effects
  • positive effects.

The Scoping Report for the assessment of the NDA Strategy and LLW Strategy also considered all relevant potential social and economic effects.
