Background Information
Credible options
As a statutory obligation, there is no realistic credible option but to provide socio-economic support.
NDA Strategic Position
The NDA’s strategy is to minimise the impact of decommissioning and clean-up through three drivers:
- enhancing the opportunity for local people to be involved in decommissioning work through education, retraining and skills development
- supporting the diversification of the local community
- increasing the attractiveness of areas near NDA sites as places to live, work and invest.
The NDA’s approach to socio-economic support and development is defined in more detail in its Socio-Economic Policy.

How Socio-economics relates to other topics
As a critical enabler, Socio-Economic Development is relevant to all Topic Strategies.
Future work programme
The NDA Socio-Economic Policy provides the framework in which the NDA fulfils its socio-economic obligations. The effects of the NDA’s activities, as well as the specific socio-economic needs of local communities, are different in each area in which the NDA operates. The next step will be to develop “Priority Area Strategies,” which will provide greater focus for the NDA’s socio-economic activities in each of the priority areas identified in our Socio-economic Policy.
