UK/French Co-operation Agreement

30 June 2010

Hervé Bernard, Vice Chairman of CEA and Bruce McKirdy, Acting Managing Director for the Radioactive Waste Management Directorate of the NDA

CEA-NDA co-operation agreement signed in the field of radioactive waste management and dismantling and decommissioning of nuclear facilities.  The alternative energies and atomic energy commission (CEA) of France and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) of the UK signed a co-operation agreement on June 14 in Oxford in the field of radioactive waste management, and dismantling and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. The NDA is the public body responsible for the decommissioning and clean-up of the UK's civil public sector nuclear sites and for implementing geological disposal.

The agreement between the two organisations, which are involved in large scale nuclear dismantling and decommissioning operations and radioactive waste management activities, agreed to collaborate on the following areas of mutual interest:

  • Dismantling and decommissioning methodology, cost estimate and project management
  • Retrieval and treatment of waste and related cost estimates
  • Transport
  • Soils pollution, methodology of pollution evaluation and environmental impact assessment

The agreement was signed by Hervé Bernard, Vice Chairman of CEA and Bruce McKirdy, Acting Managing Director for the Radioactive Waste Management Directorate of the NDA.

This new agreement will significantly reinforce the strategic French-British co-operation on nuclear matters.
