Site representatives visit Dounreay

30 July 2010

 Dounreay site visit

Site stakeholders from around the country visited Dounreay to see at first hand how a range of challenges are being addressed.

The 18 representatives from 10 of the NDA's Site Stakeholder Groups were given a presentation by DSRL Managing Director Simon Middlemas and toured key facilities, including the Dounreay Fast Reactor, Breeder Fuel Removal, the Prototype Fast Reactor and the Waste Receipt Assay Characterisation and Supercompaction facility.

The stakeholders were invited as guests of Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd, the NDA and the Dounreay Stakeholder Group, following a similar visit to Sellafield some two years ago.  All the SSG representatives gained a great deal from the visit, including an improved understanding of the scale and complexity of the challenges at Dounreay, as well as a greater appreciation of why the NDA prioritises funds towards tackling high hazards.

Richard Smith, who chairs the SSG Chairs' Forum, said:

"The evidence of good work was evident everywhere on site and we all felt our time (and the effort to get to you!) was fully justified. Thanks for having us and making us so welcome."
