Safe and Secure Sites Programme
09 July 2008
One of the NDA’s main functions is to look at all the scenarios which could be applied during the clean-up and decommissioning of all its sites.
As part of this process, it has asked Magnox to identify the minimum level of spending needed to ensure the safe and secure operation of the redundant power stations. The NDA has stressed this is a planning exercise and no decision to follow such a course of action has been taken. On top of this any decision would require approval of the Regulators following their scrutiny of the safety and environmental impacts. (See the NDA Business Plan)
Magnox has established a Programme called Safe, Secure, Sites (S3) which is assessing the feasibility of contingency options for safe, secure sites from a safety, technical and a people perspective. Their programme team is working closely with their sites, the regulators trade unions and the NDA.
A Senior Strategy Group led by NDA Assurance Director, Jim Morse, is guiding the programme to ensure the work meets the NDA’s needs.
Ultimately the information from the S3 Programme will provide NDA with viable contingency options for interim safe and secure states for the Magnox sites. This will then be considered by the NDA and may be feed into the next draft NDA Strategy for consultation.
Joint Councils and Stakeholder Groups have been engaged at a national and local level by Magnox. A successful workshop with trade unions has been held and briefings have been given to Site Stakeholder Groups.
It is anticipated that the NDA will receive the final report from Magnox in October 2008.
