RWMD Restructure
06 December 2011
Our Radioactive Waste Management Directorate (RWMD) has recently undertaken a review of its organisational structure. The high level objective was to develop a structure to deliver RWMD's programme mission and objectives in the most efficient manner. The review focussed on the requirements of the organisation for the next five years.
Bruce McKirdy, Managing Director of RWMD, explained:
"As much of our work will be done through the supply chain, we needed to ensure that RWMD was a lean, intelligent client focussed organisation."
"The proposed organisational change was formally submitted to the Environment Agency, Office for Nuclear Regulation and Department for Transport who raised no objections to proceeding with implementation of the new structure. We will take account of the advice received from the regulators and our own Nuclear Safety and Environment Committee in implementing the new structure."

The new structure came into effect on 1 June 2011.
Bruce McKirdy is now supported by four executive directors:
Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Director – responsible for providing HSSE leadership for RWMD and advice and assurance to the RWMD Executive and Repository Development Management Board (RDMB) on HSSE matters. This includes co-ordinating our relationships with regulators and the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) and developing our arrangements for managing safety and environmental protection.
Science Director – overall responsibility for development of RWMD's technical strategy and responsible for research, disposal system specifications and site investigations.
Engineering Director – responsible for engineering design of the transport system and geological disposal facility, safety, environmental and sustainability assessments, transport, operational and post-closure performance, our programme for implementing geological disposal, management of RWMD's key projects and work with waste producers to improve the overall management of higher activity wastes.
Business Services Director – responsible for the business wide activities needed to support RWMD's work. This includes stakeholder engagement and communications, management system and processes, programme and project controls, finance, procurement and Human Resources.
