Prime Minister welcomes NDA land nomination

28 January 2009

Handshake between Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, and NDA Acting Chief Executive, Richard Waite.

On Friday 23 January 2009, we announced that we expect to nominate some 200plus hectares of land to the north of the existing Sellafield site for consideration under Government's Strategic Siting Assessment for identifying suitable sites for nuclear new build.

Whilst we will not develop the new plants, nor seek planning permission, since this will be the responsbility of any new owners, the nomination will enhance the value of the land and fulfil our obligation to maximise value for the taxpayer.

"Our aim is to secure value from our assets for the benefit of the taxpayer" says NDA Acting CEO Richard Waite

"Such a move has the added benefit of contributing towards the socio-economic aims of the West Cumbria communities".

Richard was on hand at Sellafield on Friday to welcome Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, and Energy Minister, Mike O'Brien, on their first visit to the UK's largest nuclear site. It was during an informal meeting with local community and industry representatives that the PM welcomed the day's news:

"The NDA's announcement is good news and I am pleased to be here to welcome it. With such deep rooted ties to the nuclear industry Sellafield is in a strong position to benefit from potential new build." he said.

We also confirmed that land at Wylfa in Anglesey, Bradwell in Essex and Oldbury in Gloucestershire will be nominated. This land is currently being disposed of via an auction process and a further announcment will be made shortly on the precise process and timing of the Sellafield land sale.

As to whether any of the sites will turn out to be suitable remains to be seen as Energy Minister, Mike O'Brien pointed out:

"The call for potential sites is a key milestone but the suitability of all potential sites will be assessed against the Government's rigorous siting criteria". Full details of the process can be found on the BERR website www.berr.gov.uk
