Best Ever Year of Electricity Generation for Magnox North

11 May 2010

Oldbury Turbine Hall (care of Magnox North Ltd)

Magnox North, a Site Licence Company owned by EnergySolutions has ended the year on a high as the annual electricity generation figures have revealed another 'record breaking' total on our behalf. We own the sites: Wylfa, Oldbury (the world's oldest operating nuclear power station) and Maentwrog hydroelectric station which have generated 8.196 Twh of electricity since April 1 2009 - worth well over £300m to the UK taxpayer.

This figure is more than 3 Twh above our target for the past 12 months and marks Magnox North's best ever performance in electricity generation.

Exceeding these targets by such a large margin was only made possible by continuing the safe generation of electricity at Oldbury power station, in Gloucestershire, which had been scheduled to close on 31 December 2008.

It is even more remarkable given that there have been 3 scheduled outages at the 2 stations in the previous 12 month period, where the nuclear reactors are brought off-line to perform statutory maintenance and safety checks.

Sara Johnston, the NDA's Programme Director for Magnox, said:

"This is an excellent achievement, generating valuable revenue for the decommissioning mission, and a tribute to the hard work by Magnox North and the teams at Oldbury, Wylfa and Maentwrog."

Magnox North's Managing Director, Neil Baldwin*, said:

"Safe electricity generation is extremely important to us, our customer - the NDA, and for the UK. This achievement is testament to the professionalism and commitment of the workforce across our whole business."

He added:

"We have passed 8 Twh this year - that's enough electricity to power 2 million homes – and the considerable revenue made from this exceptional generation performance is extremely valuable in funding the ongoing decommissioning and clean-up of the country's civil nuclear legacy."

This announcement comes shortly after Wylfa site, on Anglesey, passed a year without a single 'lost time accident'.
