Fuel removal milestone at Chapelcross
27 August 2010

Defuelling at Chapelcross site in Scotland reached a significant milestone this week as the 50th flask was safely shipped to the Sellafield for reprocessing.
Progress on removing more than 38,000 fuel elements from all four reactors has remained steady following formal permission to start defuelling from the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) in July 2009.
To date 7,178 fuel elements have been removed and sent for reprocessing in 50 flasks, representing almost 20% of the defuelling programme, with each flask containing an average of 144 fuel elements. The scheduled completion date is April 2012.
Tim Dunham, Operations and Project Manager in charge of the defuelling project, said:
"This is a great achievement for the site and is a credit to the skilled workforce currently focussed on the defuelling project".
