Windscale is a separate licensed site located on the Sellafield site in Cumbria. It comprises three reactors, two of which were shutdown in 1957 and the third in 1981. Decommissioning activities began in the mid 1980s and are expected to continue until 2015. At that stage all nuclear facilities will be in a passively safe condition.
