The Joint European Torus (JET), located at Culham in Oxfordshire, is the world’s largest fusion research machine. JET is operated by UKAEA undera contract from EURATOM under the terms of the European Fusion Development Agreement (EFDA) which covers the costs of the operational programme.
Although not currently designated, the NDA understands that the intention of Government is to designate that part of the Culham Site occupied by the JET facilities as an NDA site at an appropriate time after Jet operation ceases. The NDA would then take responsibility for the decommissioning programme that is expected to take 10 years to complete.
