Future Plans

This section provides a brief description of the Bradwell site as outlined in the NDA's strategy.

The scope, schedule and cost of work needed to decommission the sites are reviewed annually by the NDA and its contractors during the Life Time Plan (LTP) review process.


Site End State

Current assumed end state is a delicensed site, with all surface structures and all subsurface structure to 1m removed. It is assumed that removal of residual contamination in the ground down to a very low level of 0.4 (Bq/g) Becquerel per gram total radionuclides is required to meet the criteria defined by the regulator.

Current Key Milestones

The key decommissioning milestones for the lifecycle of this site, taken from the 2004 Life Cycle Baseline (LCBL):

2006 Defuelling completed – all fuel has been removed from reactors 1 and 2 and sent to Sellafield. Site has NII approval to instigate decommissioning staffing structure
2010 Safestore – Reactors 1 and 2 Safestore preparations complete
2015 Waste operations complete – all LLW and ILW retrieved and in newly built store, retrieval equipment de-planted/demolished
2016 Care and maintenance – site in passively safe condition and period of care and maintenance begins
2095 Final site clearance begins – end of period of care and maintenance and commencement of final clearance
2103 Final site clearance and closure
