Why has the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority put this together?

We are a public sector body charged with the responsibility of decommissioning and clean-up of the UK's current public sector nuclear legacy. We have a major role in ensuring there is a sustainable workforce to achieve our mission. A world class graduate programme supported by a host of like-minded partners is a significant part of fulfilling that objective.

The challenges facing our industry are huge and range from decommissioning to engineering new solutions, from nuclear power stations to ship yards, from the wilds of the Highlands to the docks of Plymouth.

The Programme

The programme is one of the most ambitious ever put together for graduates and a formidable partnership of companies have worked together to create it.

You will go through 3 secondments:

• three in the UK; and for around half our graduates one abroad (in places such as the United States, France or Japan).

These structured secondments will give you the best possible experience because they are mapped against the criteria needed by professional bodies such as CIPA, ICE, IMECHE and CIMA.

Mobility is critical to this programme. As pioneers, travelling the length and breadth of the country, you will experience different companies in different locations.

You will have the challenge of learning a range of managers' styles, geographical cultures, business type characteristics and how supply chains differ. The projects are supported by offsite graduate specific training at a nuclear graduate training facility. Subjects range from project management to team communication, and from nuclear science to commercial awareness.

A nuclear careers counsellor will support you and at the end of your programme your CV will go to the twenty organisations that make up the programme. You can then choose from their offers. We give you the experience but you decide your future.

Training

The training is there to support you and to move you towards your status as a chartered professional. You will go through a blend of behavioural and technical training offsite at our nuclear graduate training facility. We will stretch your mind to take on new work processes and commercial challenges, whilst equipping you to deliver your day job - changing the face of our industry forever.

All the way through your development you will have the programme support team including, personalised to you:

• training mentor; and
• personal sponsor.

You will also have individual project mentors and line managers. You will mix with people from different backgrounds and disciplines, ranging from scientists to engineers, accountants to project managers.

Your cohort will always be there, and the bonds you form in that group will be amongst the strongest you have ever made. Only the others on your programme will understand your challenge as a pioneer on this programme.

Footprints Programme

Many companies have corporate social responsibility policies. As a unique programme we were able to build ours around you. Our "Footprints" programme ties your development into leaving a lasting impact on the areas you work in. This is delivered in two ways:

• "Footprints Days"; and
• 10% of your time.

Footprints Days

This is an innovative and exclusive programme designed for the nuclear graduate scheme. You will go with your cohort on four sets of two programme days looking at distinctive issues facing the UK as a whole today. These will include education, the environment, business and community. The site visits through these will include schools, prisons, police stations, factory floors and farms. You will find out how the economy works, what life is like outside the nuclear industry and most important how you can impact it through your 10% voluntary time.

10% Time

Following the Footprints Days you will work with the Footprints team to select voluntary work in local communities. This time will be spent using your unique skills to support local businesses, community groups and schools. All of this can be mapped into your professional development as well as giving you the opportunity to meet characters from different walks of life.
