NDA in advanced discussions over new future for Springfields

10 September 2009

The NDA is required to maximise the value of its commercial assets and the global nuclear renaissance has enabled the NDA to explore possibilities for extracting greater value from Springfields than was previously envisaged.

The NDA is now in advanced discussions with Westinghouse over a deal that would provide excellent value for money for the taxpayer whilst also providing Westinghouse and the Springfields' workforce with the opportunity to develop future business opportunities.

The basis of these discussions is:

  • That responsibility for the commercial business and staff moves from NDA to Westinghouse
  • A long lease providing an income stream to NDA
  • The deferral of site closure reducing NDA spend on decommissioning in near term with no increase in NDA liability
  • Historic liabilities to be retained by the NDA while any new liabilities from April 2010 will be the responsibility of Westinghouse
  • Westinghouse to have the freedom to invest in the site enabling them to develop a long term employment opportunity

John Clarke, NDA Commercial Director said:

"The NDA has enjoyed a successful 5 year relationship with Westinghouse as the Management & Operations contractor for Springfields. Their long term understanding of the site together with their experience as a nuclear fuel vendor makes Westinghouse a good partner to exploit the potential of the site. The NDA will work hard to ensure this great commercial opportunity that could provide continued employment and a long term platform for increased investment is a success. We will, of course, continue to deliver our Energy Act obligations in terms of the current nuclear liabilities in relation to the site."

The two organisations expect to conclude their negotiations over the coming months with a view to the proposed arrangements coming in to effect by April 2010.
