Notes to editors
The scope of the work covered by the management contract will be:
- Element 1: which will focus in the early years on the management of the national low level waste disposal facility near Drigg in West Cumbria and the maintenance of future capacity in Vault 8; progressing approvals for and provision of Vault 9; and maintaining the licence to operate by obtaining approval of the required safety cases from the regulators.
A vital aspect of the work is the development of a Post Closure Safety Case and subsequent regulatory approval for the long term future of the site. The contractor will be expected to engage fully with local stakeholders and the communities they represent. This is an essential requisite of overall success.
- Element 2: looks to the development of a UK-wide Low Level Waste solution to manage the increased levels of waste generated by the NDA’s decommissioning programme. The NDA wishes to see best practice and innovative thinking brought to bear on this considerable challenge.
In compliance with EU procurement regulations, the NDA does not intend to issue further media statements regarding this competition until the announcement on the award of contract to the successful bidder.
