Positive consultation for the proposed Nuclear Decommissioning Industry Wide Pension Scheme

21 March 2006

The proposals for a Nuclear Decommissioning Industry Wide Pension Scheme (IWS) have met with broad support. A three month consultation, run by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), closed on the 8th March and generated over 80 responses. In addition a number of meetings were held with union representatives, BNFL and UKAEA managers to examine the detailed proposals of the new scheme.

Peter Vaughan, NDA Head of Pensions, says: “Employees across the nuclear decommissioning industry place great importance on pensions and we will consider carefully all responses as we develop the new scheme for Government approval. In addition to detailed responses from trade unions, industry employers and pension trustees we received over seventy responses from individuals within the nuclear decommissioning industry.

We have had constructive discussions with the union representatives and employers throughout the consultation on all aspects of the proposed scheme. We have an ongoing relationship with the unions and employers and will continue to work with them to ensure the IWS is successful.”

The NDA will publish a consolidated response to the comments received on this website, and will submit final proposals for the design of the new scheme to Government for approval. The IWS is being developed to take in its first members in August 2006.
