The NDA as Implementing Body for Deep Geological Disposal and the Transfer of Nirex Functions to the NDA

01 December 2006

Further to the Government’s post-CoRWM announcement of October 25, Government confirmed on the 30 November that ownership shares in Nirex have now been transferred to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

The shares transfer follows a period of formal consultation between Government and the Nirex Board. The NDA is now discussing with Nirex colleagues plans for their integration, and a detailed consultation with Nirex staff about their future roles will take place over the next three months.

Sir Anthony Cleaver, Chairman of the NDA said:

“Nirex staff have contributed significantly to CoRWM’s thinking, and I am delighted we now have the opportunity with them to take forward the next phase of the geological disposal concept. There is tremendous technical expertise within Nirex which will be of great assistance in framing the way forward. We will now be talking to our new colleagues about the opportunities that lie ahead in a restructured NDA.”

Cliff Williams, who will remain as Chair of UK Nirex Ltd during the transition, said:

“I look forward to working with our new colleagues to achieve a smooth and effective integration which will harness the skills and expertise of Nirex staff. I am confident we have an exciting future ahead, and our staff will enjoy a new and important strategic role within the NDA.”
