Low Level Radioactive Waste Policy: NDA Statement
26 March 2007
The NDA welcomes publication of the UK Government and devolved administrations’ revised policy for the management of solid low level radioactive waste (LLW).
The new policy clarifies the options and requirements for the long term management of solid low level radioactive waste while maintaining the necessary levels of safety and environmental responsibility through the application of a risk informed approach.
It also allows greater flexibility in the management of the wide range of LLW that already exists and will arise in future from the NDA’s clean-up programme and other nuclear industry and non-nuclear industry producers.
We are pleased to accept the responsibility for developing a UK-wide nuclear LLW management strategy and plans, as well as supporting the Government and devolved administrations in their preparation of a strategy for the management of non-nuclear LLW.
The NDA will continue to develop its programme of work for considering options and will consult with stakeholders on the long term management of UK nuclear industry LLW.
