Background

Sellafield Ltd is the Site Licence Company (SLC) that manages and operates, on behalf of the NDA, the:

  • reprocessing and waste storage facilities at Sellafield;
  • former nuclear power stations Calder Hall and Windscale;

The Sellafield site represents two thirds of the nuclear liabilities for which the NDA is responsible.

The Parent Body Organisation (PBO) provides key managers to the Site Licence Company to provide innovation and strategic direction.

The contract is for an initial period of five years (2008-2013) with options to continue. This contract provides the Parent Body Organisation, through its ownership of the Site Licence Company shares, with responsibility for over £1 billion of annual funding to operate the existing reprocessing facilities and manage the Sellafield decommissioning programme.
