UK Management of Solid Low Level Radioactive Waste from the Nuclear Industry - Draft Strategy and Strategic Environmental Assessment

Type: Statutory

Starting Date: 05/06/2009

Closing Date: 30/11/2009

Short Description

Defra Policy for the Long Term Management of Solid Low Level Radioactive Waste in the UK

The consultation document set out the proposed UK strategy for solid low level radioactive wastes arising from the nuclear industry.

The draft strategy was developed in response to revised Government policy for the management of solid Low Level Waste (LLW) in the UK - see link in see also references for more details.

The draft strategy was primarily aimed at nuclear industry waste producers (current and future), the environmental regulators, and waste planning bodies. It is also relevant to non-nuclear industry waste producers, waste management facility operators and suppliers of waste treatment services.

The strategy will also be of interest to other parties affected by Low Level Waste (LLW) management, for example communities where waste is managed.

Cover of the consultation document

The Environmental and Sustainability Report was part of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) undertaken to inform the draft UK Strategy for the Management of Solid Low Level Radioactive Waste from the Nuclear Industry (UK Nuclear Industry LLW Strategy).

A summary document highlights the content of the UK Nuclear Industry LLW Strategy, describes the assessment process, and identifies the findings and recommendations arising from the assessment.

Final Documents

PDF UK Strategy for the Management of Solid Low Level Radioactive Waste from the Nuclear Industry August 2010 (2Mb)
The UK strategy for the management of solid low level radioactive waste from the nuclear industry has been developed to reflect and implement Government Policy. The aim is to provide a high level framework within which low level radioactive waste (LLW) management decisions can be taken flexibly to ensure safe, environmentally acceptable and cost-effective management solutions that reflect the nature of the LLW concerned.
