Our role in geological disposal

 Waste Management

The Managing Radioactive Waste Safety White Paper confirmed that we are responsible for planning and implementing geological disposal of radioactive waste in the UK. Accordingly, our Radioactive Waste Management Directorate (RWMD) is developing into an effective delivery organisation to implement a safe, sustainable and publicly acceptable geological disposal programme.

Government policy states that the siting of a geological disposal faciliy will be based on a voluntarism and partnership approach.

Brief history

The UK has been producing radioactive waste since the 1940s and over the years there have been various initiatives to deal with these materials.

Steps towards implementation

We describe the preparatory work that we have undertaken so far and the planning of our future work programme.
